Amphetamines and Methamphetamines (T619)

[Back]
RISK ASSESSMENT VALUE:  Amphetamines are potent central nervous system stimulants with high abuse potential. Tolerance develops rapidly and psychological dependence is very high. Amphetamines may be used in the treatment for obesity, attention disorder, hyperactivity and narcolepsy. Illicit use is felt to be associated with a high risk of accidental and all cause mortality.
NORMAL RESULTS:  Negative (less than 1000 ng/ml by screening assay on urine)
ABNORMAL RESULTS:  The original immunoassay is confirmed by GC/MS when positive. The screening cutoff for amphetamines is 1000 ng/mL. The confirmation cutoff for either amphetamine or methamphetamine in those samples is 500 ng/mL by GC/MS. This concentration is consistent with ingestion of the substance or the substance-producing medication sometime within the 48-hour period preceding the urine collection.
ADDITIONAL TESTS:  None.
SAMPLE NEEDED:  Urine specimen in a properly sealed and labeled urine container; plasma from gray top tube.
SAMPLE STABILITY:  Ten days at room temperature; 2 weeks when refrigerated; indefinitely when frozen.
METHOD & INSTRUMENT:  p-Nitrophenylphosphate is hydrolyzed to phosphate and p-nitrophenol, Hitachi Modular.
