Adding Lp(a), ApoB, ApoA-1, and hsCRP as an Advanced CV Risk Panel to Improve Mortality Risk Prediction.
CRL is proud to announce the launch of its new 4-Test Advanced Cardiovascular (CV) Risk Panel, now available for selective use in underwriting higher face amount policies and applicants with elevated cardiovascular risk profiles. These biomarkers are gaining traction in the medical community, with organizations like the American Heart Association recognizing their value in assessing cardiovascular risk.
This comprehensive panel includes:
- Apolipoprotein B (ApoB)
- Apolipoprotein A-1 (ApoA-1)
- ApoB/ApoA-1 ratio
- Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)]
- High-Sensitivity C-reactive Protein (hsCRP)
Why This Panel Matters
While traditional cholesterol testing has long been a cornerstone of cardiovascular risk assessment, it doesn’t tell the full story. The Advanced CV Risk Panel offers a more nuanced, individualized view — especially valuable for:
- Applicants aged 50 and older
- Those with adverse risk-decisions based lipids
- Individuals with family histories of cardiovascular disease
- Other edge cases where traditional metrics fall short
Historically, underwriting has focused on cholesterol levels due to their role in arterial plaque formation. However, cholesterol buildup is more closely tied to the number of apolipoprotein particles — not just the cholesterol level itself.
Lp(a) is a genetically determined lipoprotein that contributes to plaque formation independently of other lipids and is not detected by standard cholesterol tests or treated by statins. Up to 20% of the population may have elevated Lp(a) levels that significantly increase cardiovascular risk — yet this risk often goes unmeasured.
